Wouldn't it be great to double the size of your ranch without
having to buy land?
Sounds impossible...but there are a number of ranchers around the West who are using their head for something more than a place to hang their hat on and they've figured it out.
It's been estimated that cattle graze only 50%-75% of your average ranch. What about the remaining 25%-50%? This forage typically goes unused because it tends to be in places cattle don't normally travel. So if you could change that and get your cattle up into those unused spots you could easily increase your stocking rate.
But (you say), we've tried that and the cattle just come back to the areas they always do.
Some ranchers have worked at it to the point where they figured out how to get cattle doing things that cattle don't normally do.
Is it magic?
Are they "cow whisperers"?
No and no.
In fact, it's the same way our great grandfathers worked cattle. It was a way of life before the invention of barbed wire.
